Earlier this year, our team set out to reimagine how we could elevate SASSO’s internship program. We wanted to create an experience that went beyond general, daily tasks. One that offered meaningful, hands-on learning and mentorship within the fast-paced world of communications and marketing. With that goal in mind, we worked together to redevelop the program into something that truly reflects SASSO’s culture, creativity, and commitment to growth, while helping shape the future of our industry’s emerging professionals. During the summer and fall of 2025, intern Sophia Sluyter experienced this new approach firsthand, and we recently sat down with her to reflect on what she learned along the way.
Q: What was it like interning at SASSO?
It was incredible! What stood out most was how involved I got to be with everyone on the team. I wasn’t just working in one corner of the agency, I met, collaborated with, and learned from every single person. That kind of access isn’t something every intern gets, and it made all the difference. Huge shoutout to the entire SASSO crew: Alannie Broussard, Blaine Boudreaux, Caroline Cantrelle, Constance Zaragoza Edwards, Jasmine Arias, Josh Dickerhoof, Katie Swetman, Kelly Duvall, Mary Elizabeth Dum, Michael Lipe, Quinn Miller, Rebecca Wilbee, Samantha Blanchard Henriques, Stan Levy, and Zachary Dupuis.
Q: What were some of your favorite projects or highlights?
Definitely being on set for Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) shoots. There’s nothing like seeing the creative process in action. I also got to work on product photography for Luccini and edit reels for LEGION, which helped me grow both creatively and technically.
Plus, I produced social media videos for SweetSpot and LEGION, which taught me how to balance planning with flexibility. When one of my first shoots got rained out, I had to pivot quickly, rethink the storyboard, find an indoor court, and even come up with a last-minute unboxing idea that turned out great.
Q: What did you learn about content creation?
A lot about adaptability and resourcefulness. I learned to repurpose existing footage in new ways. Digging through SASSO’s content bank pushed me to find fresh stories in old clips.
When I assisted with developing content for GoAuto Insurance, I realized that even the most complex topics can be approachable. Insurance may have seemed intimidating at first, but once I started imagining what someone might Google at 2 a.m. (“Do I need full coverage?” “Why is my rate going up?”), it all clicked. Writing clearly, casually, and with empathy made the information actually useful.
Q: Speaking of writing, what surprised you most about it?
That good writing isn’t about sounding smart, it’s about being helpful. I learned how important it is to fact-check, simplify, and think like the reader. It’s more about clarity than cleverness.
Q: You mentioned working on social media calendars, too. What was that like?
That was another big learning moment. I developed social media content calendars, but didn’t design the graphics myself this time. That meant I had to translate visual ideas into words for our graphic designer, Alexa Gutowski. It taught me how important communication is in creative work. I learned to be clear, precise, and intentional when describing visuals, a great exercise in cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Q: What about your on-set experience? What did you take away from that?
I loved it. Watching the creative and production teams collaborate behind the scenes was inspiring. I realized how passionate I am about the storytelling side of visuals, how color, composition, and movement can make an idea come alive.
It also made me want to keep building my photo and video production skills. Being on set just felt right.
Q: Did you get to contribute to any bigger-picture projects?
Yes! I helped revamp SASSO’s social media strategy by running a competitive analysis, brainstorming 40+ ideas, and contributing to a fresh content plan. Seeing how strategic thinking and creative execution come together was eye-opening.
Q: Looking back, what’s your biggest takeaway from this internship?
Stay flexible. Stay curious. And never stop learning from the people around you. Whether I was brainstorming with the team, shooting content, or writing copy, I learned that creativity thrives on collaboration and adaptability.
I’m so grateful for the experience and for everyone who helped make it happen.
